This incredible sculpture has been popping up on my Facebook page in recent days. It captures so succinctly that moment of blinding pain when a mother or father hold their dead child. For those of us who have lost a child the anguish on this woman’s face is SO real. The cry to heaven. The unbelief in this dark reality. Shock! Why? Overwhelming emotions that crush the soul.
As you read this blog it’s very likely a mother or father is hearing for the first time that their son or daughter has died. Some will have the privilege of holding their child in their arms one last time. Others will not, depending on the circumstances.
We are heading into the Holiday Season here in America. For the vast majority of people this is a much anticipated time of family gatherings, laughter, and catching up on the events of the past year.
But for those who have lost a son or daughter, the days ahead can be filled with dread and overwhelming depression. Once again, Judy and I ask that if you know someone who has lost a child - and it doesn’t have to have been a death this year, it could be years ago - please reach out to them this holiday season and let them know you remember. It’s a precious gift to those who are grieving. A quick, short note, through the mail brings comfort. A phone call that mentions their child’s name. An invitation to the local coffee shop. By the way, dads need this too.
Thanks for caring for those in need. Thanks too to the many people who reached out to Judy and me during October to tell us you remember Mickey. It meant so much. Love you, God bless, Pat & Judy
